Building Sustainable Simulation Labs
SSN helps government and private hospitals set up low-cost, sustainable simulation rooms, labs and skill corners, training master trainers and mentors who then support health facilities at every subsequent tier of the system.

Strengthening Competency and Quality Improvement in Maternal and Newborn Care in Hospitals in Nepal

10 health facilities: Lumbini Province (Arghakhanchi, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi) & Sudurpaschim Province (Baitadi, Kailali, Kanchanpur)

What the programme does:
- Strengthens clinical competencies for quality, evidence-based maternal and newborn care (KMC, PPH management, newborn resuscitation, simulation-based debriefing)
- Builds low-cost, sustainable simulation rooms, labs and skill corners at 10 health facilities
- Strengthens a federal-to-local mentoring network with NEPAS, PESON, PNAN, MIDSON, and NESOG
- Strengthens quality-improvement systems: MPDSR, Safer Births Bundle of Care, Labour Care Guide, PPH bundle approaches
- Engages communities using Human-Centered Design (HCD), focused on marginalized and at-risk groups
Track Record
Past Programs
Strengthening Maternal & Newborn Care, Province-2 (UNICEF, 2019–2020)
UNICEF and SSN partnered to implement simulation-based education in selected high-delivery-volume hospitals in Province-2, effective November 2019 – October 2020, at Janakpur Provincial Hospital, Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital (Saptari), and Narayani Hospital (Birgunj).
Objectives:
- Increase health workers’ knowledge and skills in neonatal care, respectful maternity care, and infection prevention
- Review and update the National Medical Standard Volume III on Maternal and Newborn Health
Major activities:
- Coordination with provincial government, health directorates, and hospital sites
- Development of training capsules and simulation experts
- Low-dose high-frequency (LDHF) simulation sessions
- Operational research and review of National Medical Standards Volume III
- COVID-19 response support in Bara, Doti and Bajhang, including virtual training and simulation
COVID-19 E-Learning Module: IPC & Critical Care (GIZ-S2HSP, 2020)
In partnership with GIZ-S2HSP, SSN developed and delivered an e-learning module on Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) and critical care management for COVID-19 response, from 17 June to 4 September 2020.
Project sites:
- Janakpur Provincial Hospital, Narayani Hospital, Patan Hospital, and Mahakali Hospital, with approximately 60 doctors and nurses in Emergency and Isolation Critical Care units
Major activities:
- Supported development of PPE, sample collection, and critical care training videos
- Developed e-learning content on IPC and critical care
- Conducted virtual IPC and critical care training at 4 COVID-specific hospitals
- Research on the effectiveness of skills and simulation-based e-learning for COVID-19 management
Restart a Heart Day 2019, with Norvic International Hospital
On Restart a Heart Day, 16 October 2019, SSN partnered with Norvic International Hospital to conduct a one-day skills training program on cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, and airway management at Norvic International Hospital, Kathmandu.
Basic Life Support Training, with National Neuro Centre (NNC)
SSN partnered with National Neuro Centre to conduct a one-day Basic Life Support (BLS) training, including content from ACLS, for around 40 health care providers.
Research
Generating Evidence for Better Care
SSN generates evidence through baseline, midline, and endline research embedded in its programmes, and contributes findings to national maternal and newborn health policy discussions.
